Stupas |
Stupas are an extremely significant characteristic feature of the Hindu Architecture of the Mauryan Empire. The architectural design of the Stupas has been derived from the Buddhist philosophical ideologies and has been put to use. The Stupas have been given various names in various countries, for example they are known as Chedi in south East Asian countries. They are also referred to as tope in some Asian countries.
Two of the most famous Stupas are located in Sanchi and Sarnath. The idea behind building the Stupas is that the relics of Buddha have to be kept in them. Even though very little information is available about the Stupas built in the early times, those built during the reign of the Mauryan King, Ashoka bring have been able to give enough relevant information about their origin and development. |
