Hindu Sculptures of the Mauryan Empire

Hindu Sculptures of the Mauryan Empire is some of the most significant milestones in the history of Hindu sculpture. Especially during the rein of emperor Ashoka, when he became a follower of Buddhism, at that period of time Hindu sculpture saw the greatest development. Before that the stress was not so much on the construction of ornately decorated monuments. However, with the influence of Buddhist form of architecture falling on the Mauryan style, it became all the more prominent.

The Mauryan Empire came into existence in the year 321 BC with Chandragupta Maurya and was taken to great artistic heights by Ashoka. This period was marked in Indian history for its achievements in various fields like art and architecture, sculptures and also territorial conquests.

Some of the most impressive sculptures of Mauryan era are the Ashoka pillars, and the Stupas located in Sanchi. Apart form having cultural significance the monuments are also important from religious perspective. These monuments also give a lot of information about Ashoka’s rule. Stupas: The Stupas are one of the most important examples of the artistic splendor of the Mauryan Empire. Built with stones and bricks, the Stupas are in the shape of a dome. The pillars made of stone surrounding the dome is a distinct characteristic of the sculpture. With the construction of the Stupas the concept of gateways being carved came into the Indian architectural scenario. The Stupas were built by Ashoka with the inspiration of the Buddhist form of architecture.

Pillars
: The best example of Pillar architecture during the Mauryan era is the pillar of Ashoka, which has become a national symbol for India. The pillars are located in Sarnath and are characterized by four lions facing towards four directions. The base is in the form of a lotus with the middle portion having engravings of animal figures. The pillar is known by the name of Lion Capital and there are several lion figures made during this period of time but the most famous one remains the one in Sarnath.

The Hindu Sculptures of the Mauryan Empire also has reflections of Hellenistic art and at time also of Persian style of architecture. The architectures are also characterized by epigraphs, which give information about some of the most important developments.
